Zhou Changjiang is an important representative figure in Shanghai modern art circles. In the middle of the 1980s, he started the famous series of Complementation. For more than two decades, this series full of speculative hues and humanistic care has gradually unfolded one after another. Though each piece has its own special title, most of them could still be classified into this extensive and magnificent series. Among Zhou's creation, "complementation" is the highest-degree summarization of oriental philosophies, especially Taoism's philosophic ideology - heaven and earth, the negative and the positive, day and night, black and white, man and woman, and etc, all exist in the contradictory relations of unity of opposites, and depend on each other during the unceasing cycles.
From the perspective of specific visual form, the concept of “complementation” is presented through various carriers including molding, color, brushstroke, texture, media, cultural symbol, and etc. Having established a set of unique symbolized visual language, Zhou began the meaningful and profound conversations between the traditional and the modern, the eastern and the western, with assistance of such a language. His accomplished researches on ancient Chinese art achievements bestowed him with great confidence about national aesthetic values. In his paintings, those appropriate compositions and forceful brushstrokes embody his devout respect for Chinese calligraphic traditions. As an artist and educator, Zhou pursues art goals fully reflecting contemporary humanistic intellectual's senses of responsibility and mission.
This exhibition is Zhou's most important academic solo exhibition up till now. The exhibition's theme "Between Nature and Mankind" reflects the artist's ultimate concerns about life and the world. For this exhibition, Zhou Changjiang especially created a huge piece of work "Between Nature and Mankind", which broke away from two-dimensional painting and made an attempt towards the three-dimensional space, further predicting the completely new developing direction of the series of "Complementation". In 1989, Complementation No. 120 was awarded the silver prize in the 7th National Art Exhibition, and created the unprecedented record of a non-representational artwork winning the highest official prize in mainland China. Today after two decades, we'd like to hold this exhibition to commemorate this cultural event of historic significance.
